Tutoring

  • My tutoring is highly individualized; I design each lesson based on the prior lesson, to ensure retention of skills aiming for 100% accuracy.

  • A client typically provides me with any previous testing that has been done, for example, a psychoeducational evaluation that can provide me with information about a student’s learning history.

  • I do my own assessing that will determine the how and the what, as an Orton-Gilliingham tutor, that I will include in the student’s lessons.

  • The amount of lessons per week is determined based on need; typically, the remedial work is most successful when happening as often as possible, ideally. However, I always work with families’ personal schedules, and financial concerns.

  • The proposed hourly fee is discussed over our initial half hour phone call, no charge. The fee is also based on how often I would be seeing the student, and how complex the learning style. I do not post fees online, but prefer to discuss fees during your initial inquiry. This is due to the individual nature of the dyslexia, and also the highly individualized Orton Gillingham remedial approach.

  • A student will begin to create his or her own “Words” binder that will be left at home, so parents can easily see what’s been covered within any given week. I also send home summaries of our lessons weekly. Monthly chats are set up to give you a chance to ask questions regarding your child’s reading progress.

Counseling

I have attended school meetings and advocated for my students within both public and private school settings. I raised a child with dyslexia, so am personally very familiar with what a parent needs to know and what to ask about when attending a school special education conference. I understand the steps involved in asking for accommodations. I understand testing that’s been done within schools. I understand and can counsel parents regarding how to advocate for your child’s needs within school, based on the reports given you.

Finally, I understand the emotional toll raising a child with any special needs can have on a parent. It is something you hadn’t expected to do. I understand taking that on. Educating yourself about the nature of the disability is the first step towards alleviating the confusion. You and I would decide on a separate fee for this “counseling” I would welcome providing.
